There’s a good chance at some point in your life you’re going to want to travel with your pets. Whether it’s because you’re moving across the country, to a new country, or just wanting to involve your pets in your family vacation. Moving can be very stressful, so I suggest checking out https://www.mybekins.com/locations/carlsbad-ca-movers/ if you’re planning to move house any time soon. If you spend a little time planning in advance you can make the travel less stressful for your pets and more enjoyable for you too! Here are my top 3 tips for traveling with your pets.

1. Speak to Your Vet
I would suggest talking to your vet at least a month or two in advance of your trip if possible to ensure that you have everything ready before the trip. If you’re planning to travel overseas, it may be necessary to ensure that all your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and all included in their vaccination notebook. Some vaccinations need to be given a certain amount of time ahead of a trip, so that’s why I suggest thinking about it now so you have plenty of time to get them done. It’s also a good idea to talk to your vet about options for keeping your pet calm while traveling in a car for long distances or in an airplane. They’ll also be able to advise you on what kind of carrier you need for your pet based on the type of travel and the size of your pet. Getting in touch with your vet well ahead of time will ensure you have time to organise everything and don’t need to get stressed.

2. Think About How You’ll Entertain Your Pet
It can be extremely boring for a pet to travel a long distance and while they’ll be so glad you took them along with them, coming up with ideas of how to entertain your pet during the travel will make things easier for the both of you. I’m a big fan of filling up Kong’s with frozen things like yoghurt, peanut butter and so forth. You can give them one at the beginning of your journey to give them something to do and to keep them calm. Another thing I like to give my dogs is great rawhide for dogs. Ensuring they have something to do can keep reduce their stress levels and make the journey easier for everyone.

3. Get Them Used to Their Carrier
If you’re going to have to use a carrier for you pet, then you’re going to want to invest some time getting them used to it so they can feel comfortable and confident in their carrier. Thankfully my dogs are already crate trained, as when they were puppies they were destructive so they had to be in the crate at times when I couldn’t supervise them. That makes it so much easier for us if we need to travel with them in the crate. If your pets aren’t used to their pets or their carriers, you can start a few weeks before the trip by feeding your pets in their carriers.
