Here’s why UK travelers are choosing island destinations for their next holidays

Readers of this blog know I love a good island vacation, and try to include at least one a year so I can actually relax. While city holidays are fun, I always find myself doing tons of walking and trying to fit as much as possible into a short amount of time. And that means that I often return home feeling just as stressed and exhausted as when I left.

Travel experts Opodo have recently released a super interesting infographic about why travellers are choosing island destinations, and asked me to weigh in on the research.

Did you know that 75% of Brits are choosing island destinations because of the weather? As the nights grow longer, and the weather grows colder around this time of the year, it’s easy to see why. Interestingly, however, 61% have said that they choose island destinations for the culture. I can see why, as in my experience, people who live on islands tend to be a lot more relaxed and easygoing compared to those of us who live in big cities. There’s a reason why the term ‘island time’ was invented after all.

57% say they choose their island destination based on the type of food, which I totally agree with. So much of my travel experiences revolve around food!

25% say they choose based on distance from home, and after the number of long-haul flights I’ve done recently, I can see why. Just 18% choose based on the local music, which is interesting as this isn’t something I would typically consider before choosing where to go on vacation.

Of course, travelers are also attracted to different destinations based on major calendar events throughout the year. These include events like music festivals, annual events like food, drink, and cultural gatherings, local music experiences, and even the chance to see their favorite bands or artists perform. This year I am considering going to Tenerife. Tenerife is an island closer to home for a short break so it will be an awesome break for me and my family this coming holiday.

I’m already considering where my next island destination will be. I’ve always wanted to go to Bora Bora, after one of my best friends went on her honeymoon and came back raving about how amazing it was. If you’re considering the same, Opodo has a range of island holidays to Bora Bora which look incredible.

What’s interesting about this destination, is while most people tend to visualize the beach, there are also plenty of other things to do here- including hiking, shopping, and more. For more information about Brits and island destinations, be sure to check out the infographic.
