The best destinations for kids this year

It can be hard to know just where to take your kids for their next vacation, since some destinations are far more kid friendly than others. If you’re hoping to take a holiday with your kids (without being driven crazy), and you’re looking for appropriate places which won’t break the bank, here are the best destinations for kids this year:

Kerala, India

When you think of family holidays, you probably don’t think of India, but Kerala gives you an Indian experience while still keeping the pace manageable for those with kids. Head to Fort Cochin which is a small part of Kochi, bursting with great restaurants and hotels, and a peaceful place to spend a few days. The national parks in the area are incredible, and kids will go nuts for the elephants in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, while teenagers can get their adrenaline flowing with bamboo rafting.

Puglia, Italy

Located in the heel of the “boot” in Italy, this is an excellent place for families who want to relax in the sun. You’ll find plenty of pristine beaches, and the town of Otranto (located next to the sea) and its hulking castle will appeal to families from all over. The countryside is also charming, especially with the trulli-tiny limestone dwellings with cone roofs dotted around the countryside (you can even stay in one for the night if you like).

Paris, France

France has long been a favourite destination for families, but one of the biggest draws is the chance to take your children to Disneyland Paris, which sees visitors from around the world every day. Imagine how excited the kids will be to tell their friends they went to Disney- not in LA or Orlando, but in Paris! There are also plenty of other great reasons to visit- including the food, the sights, and the many family friendly attractions- including a tour through the Paris sewers for those with older kids or teenagers.

Costa Rica

This country is a world leader in adventure and eco-tourism, and the Monteverde area is an excellent example. Half of this protected area is known as the Bosque Eternal de los Niño’s, which means the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, and you’ll find a massive stretch of lush rainforest, cloudforest and evergreen forest, along with plenty of winding trails and opportunities for wildlife spotting.

This is an excellent destination for families that want to get a little more active this year, and you’ll find plenty to do, including horse riding, canopy tours, zip lines, camping, and hiking. The Monteverde Cloudforeset Biological Reserve has even more pristine forests waiting to explore, along with more adventure activities, and for those with small kids, you’ll find that trails that are pushchair-friendly at Reserva Santa Elena.

Nairobi, Kenya

Determined to get off the beaten path this year? Nairobi is the place to go, with Nairobi National Park offering the chance to see zebra, giraffe, leopards, lions, and more. Kids will also love the Giraffe Centre where they can feed the giraffes from a raised gallery, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust where elephants are continually being rehabilitated so they can be released back into the wild.
