Shoe Styles to Look Forward to This Summer

As Memorial Day fast approaches, it’s high time to upgrade your summer shoe wardrobe with shoes such as the new avatar sneakers. These trends from runways and street style spreads will put the final touch on all your favorite warm-weather styles.

Low Wedges

You don’t have to go sky high with your summer shoes to give yourself a bit of a height boost. The latest wedge sandals have just a hint of a heel, so you’ll look incredible and feel comfortable for hours. Many designers are showing this look in fun candy-color pastels.

Chain Details

When it’s time to dress up, heels and sandals with delicate gold chain accents are like jewelry for your feet. Look for styles with gold or silver embellishment that wraps around your ankle or winds down through the toes for just a hint of sparkle. Gucci and Tory Burch both have this trend in their summer 2020 collections, and it’s even popped up on classic white sneakers.

Square Toes

Square toes aren’t just reserved for your beloved Sperry boat shoes. This silhouette has gone from ho-hum to hot for summer 2020. Mules, sandals and heels from high-end designers from Balenciega to Proenza Schouler know that it’s hip to be square this season.

Chunky Soles

Chunky, spunky shoes are the 90s-inspired aesthetic you need this summer. Like the low wedge, platform soles are all about a height increase without the discomfort of a classic stiletto. Models at Tibi and Anna Sui both rocked this look in the designers’ most recent collections.

Go even more retro with a Mary Jane or a kitten heel, both on trend for the season. Sneakers are also getting a boost, with Nike releasing a platform version of the Air Force 1. Louis Vuitton showed chunky loafers in his summer runway show.

Not a fan of platforms? Go for the block heel, spotted on mules, boots and sandals for the season. Whatever your preference, serrated edges will give your chunky soles an edge (no pun intended).

Sun-Inspired Shades

Upgrade your favorite Puma shoes in a blazing orange or yellow this summer. Designers from Calvin Klein to Bottega Vaneta showed off sneakers and heels in rainbow brights this season. At its buttery best, these sunny hues can even serve as a neutral when you’re tired of tan and taupe.

Unexpected Textures

Give your shoes some flair with a quilted texture in soft leather. Zara has this look in a pristine white mule, while the version from Asos comes in a vibrant tomato red. Crocodile styles are also as hot as the summer sun this year.

Strappy Styles

From those two buckled leather straps on your iconic Birkenstock sandals to delicate ribbons twining around the ankles on a pair of classic ballet flats, strappy shoes are in style for summer 2020. Sandals with asymmetrical and exaggerated straps showed up in the collections of Manu Atelier and Matiko. Skip the toe ring and look for shoes with straps that wrap around your digits. As mentioned above, the single strap across the ankle is also in vogue as Mary Janes make a comeback (again).

Your sundresses and rompers will look better than ever when you add any (or all!) of these trendy summer shoe styles to your closet.
