There’s nothing more exciting than booking a trip and counting down the days until you depart. However, if you’re traveling during the winter months there are a few extra steps you need to take to ensure your home stays healthy and safe while you’re gone. Depending on how cold the place you live in is, you may have to be mindful about heating your pipes even while away so that they don’t freeze and/or get damaged. It can also be a good time to do a maintenance on your heating oil tank and upgrade it if necessarily. If you’d like to learn more about how to save on heating oil and to ensure everything’s in great shape, keep reading to learn more.

Upgrade Your Heating Oil Container
If your heating oil tank is old or corroded, you might be losing precious heating oil. Before a big trip is a great time to look at your heating oil tank to ensure there’s no obvious damage or leaks anywhere. There are some newer style heating oil tanks that reduce the risk of corrosion because they’re made of plastic. They are, however, so heavy they’re not easy to steal. If there’s a leak in your heating oil tank, then that will be costing you money but can also mean that your heating oil could run out while you’re away.

Get a Thermostat To Programme Your Heaters
When you’re away, you’re going to want to make sure that your pipes don’t freeze over and cause serious damage to your home. As such, you’re going to want to set up a Smart Thermostat so you can control temperatures while you’re away, especially if you’re traveling for a long time. Take a look at the longer term weather projections to see if there are any chances of frosts etc and be sure to ensure that you program minimum temperatures so the heaters kick into gear if the temperature drops too much.

Do Home Maintenance
Having leaks, cracks around the windows, poorly insulated walls etc all mean that there’s a good chance a lot of your heating is just escaping. This means your heating system will have to produce more heating in order keep up with the heat loss. Take a look at the areas of your home that might need repairs and consider repairs before any long term travel to minimise your heating costs while away.

Ask Someone To Come Check
If you’re headed away for more than a week, it can be a good idea to have a friend or family member regularly come through your home and do some checks. This could include checking the heating and humidity levels in your home. This can be a good idea as well to ensure that there’s been no damage or leaks in your home while you’re gone and gives you extra peace of mind that everything is running smoothly.

I’m sure you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday more with the peace of mind knowing that your home is properly taken care of while you’re away. Happy travels!
