There are a ton of reasons that make St. Louis a fantastic place to call home. It’s a diverse and dynamic city filled with art, culture, beautiful architecture, and a tangible sense of community. One of its biggest draws, however, is how affordable it is.

It was even named the 7th most affordable city in all of the US. Today we’re going to be looking at the cost of living in St. Louis, Missouri. What’s the average rent, how much will it cost you to buy a home, are even things like goods and services less expensive here?

Moving to a new city is a big decision so before you do, you want to get a picture of what it’s all about. That’s what we’re aiming to give you today. Read on for everything you need to know.

Renting a Home in St. Louis

Depending on where you’re looking to rent you can find a real bargain. In a moderately-priced neighborhood, a 900-square-foot apartment will set you back around $1,400. Compare this to prices in other metropolitan areas like New York ($3,400) or Los Angeles ($2,200) and you can see how affordable this really is.

Not only does St Louis have plenty of affordable housing, but the homes here are often historic, feature interesting architecture, and are well-built. For an example of one such type of housing click for more here.

Buying a Property

We’re all aware of the crazy way the housing market is behaving these days. Luckily, there are still some pockets of sanity in the country. St Louis is one such place.

Although house prices have risen there over the past 12 to 24 months, prices remain pretty affordable. At the moment the average home price stands at around $172,600. Again, when compared with the rest of the country, this is a very appealing average.

Eating and Entertainment

Of course, housing prices aren’t the only thing you’ll want to hear about in your potential new home. What’s it like to grab a bite to eat, do your weekly grocery shop, and take that someone special out on a date?

No surprises here, but again it’s not going to break the bank. You’ll be able to find dinner for two in a nice (but not Michelin star level) restaurant for around $65 dollars, and this is including drinks! Tickets to the movies for two are around $25, which means you can have a lovely evening out for a little over $100.

Groceries here are subject to the same inflation the entire country is experiencing, of course. But because they started off at a relatively low rate, you might feel the pinch a little less than you would elsewhere.
