10 Great Activities to do in Mauritius

An oft-overlooked gem of a holiday destination, gilded by lush coral reefs and nestled in the brilliant setting of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has so very much to offer any type holiday-seeker. Whether you want to draw up a detailed itinerary, or just relax and explore, the list below is a great jumping-off point.

Relax on one of the gorgeous beaches

If ‘Holiday’ to you means sun, sea and sand, then you’ll be spoilt for choice in Mauritius.  It boasts some of the most idyllic beaches of any popular holiday destination, and there’s great variety amongst them, too.  Mont Choisy offers a vast expanse of soft sand and clear, shallow waters, perfect for paddling.  If you’re on a romantic getaway, La Cuvette provides scenic privacy, and the more adventurous amongst you might want to head to La Morne, a local hotspot for windsurfing, kiteboarding and other water sports.

Take a trip on a glass bottomed boat

If you’d prefer to venture out onto the water, the Blue Bay Marine Park on the South East Coast will give you a glimpse of the marine wonderland that lies off the coast, all without getting your feet wet.

Peer beneath the waves

Now you’ve been beside the water and on the water, why not delve beneath the water, too?  Blue Bay is a well-regarded snorkelling spot, with impressive coral beds and a multitude of colourful sea creatures to observe.  For those who want to venture deeper, there are numerous dive sites for both novices and professionals, including 22 wrecks to explore.

Sample the local cuisine

Foodies’ mouths will water at the rich blend of French, Chinese, Indian and European flavours that make up Mauritian fare.  And if you fancy a tipple, the locally distilled rum is a must-try.  The Rhumerie de Chamarel distillery even offers a tour and rum tasting, for those curious about the secrets behind the delicious flavour.

Enjoy some brain food

The island has its share of stimulating museums and indoor activities, too.  Satisfy your mind as well as your taste buds with a visit to the Photography Museum in Port Louis, or the mind-bending Curious Corner in Chamarel Village, which features a mirror maze, a laser music room and an upside-down room!

Seek some real thrills

Thrill-seekers won’t be disappointed, either.  Visit Vallée des Couleurs to ride the longest zip lines in Mauritius, taking in the spectacle of the nature reserve from a bird’s-eye view.

Shop ‘til you drop

For souvenirs of your time on this island paradise, you’re sure to want to take advantage of the vibrant local markets, shopping centres and local craft shops.  In the town of Port Louis, you’ll find the lively and bustling Caudan Waterfront, the Port Louis Centre and the Port Louis market.  To experience local artisanship and take home a truly unique reminder of your holiday, you can also spend a few hours at the Glass Workshop and Museum in Pont Fer Phoenix, which offers glass blowing demonstrations and an impressive showroom and shop.

Adventure in the treetops

The Ile aux Cerfs Treetop Adventure provides a range of exciting activities for adults and children alike.  There are obstacles, nets, bridges and zip lines, and plenty of qualified instructors to ensure your safety.

Set off on Safari

Older children and adults will love this close-up look at the flora and fauna of Mauritius’ Yemen natural reserve park, including zebras, ostriches and African antelopes.  In a unique twist, you view all of this whilst zipping along on a Segway.  It doesn’t get much better than that.
