Are you thinking about travelling solo? It could be the best decision you ever made. Although going away by yourself might be a little daunting to start with – it’s also likely to be the most exciting adventure of your life. Here’s why heading off into the wide blue yonder with just yourself for company is amazing…

  1.    You’re in control

When you travel with friends, family, or as part of a couple – you have to decide together where you will go, and what you want to get out of your break. Flying solo means that you’re in control of where you’re headed and what happens while you’re away. The only person you have to please is yourself, and that is an incredibly liberating feeling.

  1.    You’ll meet more people

Going on holiday with as a couple or in a group usually means that you only socialise within that unit during your time away. If you’re by yourself, you will get many more opportunities to talk to people from all sorts of backgrounds and cultures, and maybe even learn some new languages too. If you’re a little shy about approaching people, go for tailored holidays for single people – you’ll be in a group of people who are keen to mix with others and make new friends.

  1.    You’re financially independent

Going on holiday with friends can be fraught with financial niggles. Sharing the cost of your flights, hotel, food and so on can mean that you end up covering the costs of less responsible friends. If you’re paying for your break as a couple, you both have equal say on how the budget is spent. Travelling by yourself means that you decide how every penny of your hard earned cash is spent – and you don’t have to answer to anyone when you feel like a splurge!

  1.    You’ll become more self-sufficient

If you’re not used to spending any time alone, solo travelling is a great way to learn how to enjoy your own company. Spending time by yourself can help you to develop greater self-awareness, which is a great tool for self-improvement in all areas of your life. Solo travelling will also help to develop your coping skills and emotional resilience, which will increase your self-confidence and self-esteem.

  1.    You can make it meaningful

Travelling as a single gal or guy means that you can choose a trip that is much more meaningful than the usual package beach break. For example, there is a whole host of ways to volunteer abroad – allowing you to head off on an adventure and do something great to help disadvantaged people at the same time.

Travelling solo might not be for the faint-hearted, but the rewards are well worth it. If your life has become stuck in a rut, and you’re longing for excitement and new experiences – packing your bag and heading off alone could be the answer you’ve been looking for. Do your research on how to stay safe, and plan your trip carefully – and you’ll wonder why you waited so long to take the plunge!
