It’s no surprise that I love traveling – after all I have an entire blog dedicated to how much I love traveling and some of my tales from around the world. Obviously there are so many things you can do overseas, including have a wonderful vacation, but I wanted to make a post about the off-the-beat things you can do overseas and maybe haven’t considered. Here are my top 3 fun things to do overseas:
1. Volunteer
Volunteering is one of the most meaningful things you can do – offering your time to those who need it most for no charge is such a wonderful way to give back. As someone who comes from a first world country and was born into a certain lifestyle because of a postcard lottery, I feel very grateful for all the opportunities I’ve personally had. I know that so many people around the world aren’t as lucky and I feel a responsibility to give back whenever I can. When looking into where to volunteer, I suggest thinking about your skill set to see what you have to offer. For example, if you studied marketing at university, maybe you could help out a charity with their marketing campaigns. Likewise if you studied medicine, then you have a very unique skillset which could be utilised in a community without a lot of healthcare access. Volunteering when you’re overseas is a wonderful way to engage with a community while giving back and it’s something I think each of us should strive to do at least once in our lives.
2. Get Your Health Checked Out
If you’re from a country that’s expensive, then you might actually find it better to seek medical treatment overseas. Of course you’re going to have to spend a decent amount of time researching because there can be extra risks involved with traveling overseas for medical care. However, you might be surprised to find out how affordable medical treatment is overseas. For example, I decided to get braces in Budapest and it was about 1/3 of the price I would pay for the same treatment in the United States. Fortunately I was able to live in Budapest and stay there for the duration of the treatment, but whether you want cosmetic surgery or dental treatment, it can be cheaper to seek it overseas. Cosmetic dentistry can be really expensive, but being open to traveling across the country or overseas for a better deal can be a great way to save money.
3. Learn a Language
Learning a language is a life skill that can open up doors for you that you didn’t know you wanted to open. It can help you become more qualified for certain positions, make traveling overseas more fun and easier, and also allow you to communicate with people who don’t speak your native tongue. Learning a language is a lot easier if you’re in a country that speaks the language and you can submerge yourself in it. It can also be a lot more affordable to learn the language in a country where it’s spoken. There are so many companies offering language courses so make sure you do your research before committing!
