Traveling, regardless of the itinerary, is always something you remember. There’s nothing quite like going to a new country, or one that you’ve been to before, and soaking in everything a foreign location and culture has to offer. Still, many of us go on trips, and come back feeling like the whole experience was a bit too filtered and “touristy”. If this sounds all too familiar, here’s some great tips for more adventurous travel.

Say “Yes” to Going Solo

Solo traveling has been becoming more and more popular in recent years, and there’s really little wonder why. When you’re traveling alone, it gives you a powerful motivation to meet new people, especially fellow travelers, and get some exciting ideas for the next thing to see or do. Keeping your travel plans loose, and letting them be shaped by the new and interesting people you meet, is a one-way ticket to new and invigorating experiences. You might join them on a bus to a fascinating, little-known village, or find yourself at a yacht rental place, getting ready to head out to sea. Whatever happens, saying “yes” to flying solo is the first step to saying “yes” to more adventures.

Find a Different Way to See the “Must-Sees”

A lot of people who are sick of touristy travel will avoid anything that’s called a “must-see” like the plague. In a lot of cases, these landmarks are called “must-sees” because you really must see them. The only issue is that they’re so popular, the experience of seeing them is often filtered through the more irritating elements of the local tourist trade. You might think there’s no way of escaping that jam-packed tour bus, but there are usually alternative ways to see the big sights of a travel destination. The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu, for example, is a great alternative to the much more popular Inca trail, and the even lesser-known Lares route is another great option. Obviously, the popularity of these “off the beaten track” options is prone to go up, and you may have to do a little digging to really avoid becoming one more part of the tourist mob. Still, if you do your research and talk to some of the locals, there’s usually a much more adventurous way to see the “must-see” sights, especially historical ones.

Choose the Right Destinations

Sometimes, the place you visit has a lot to do with how adventurous your travels turn out to be. A lot of the Greek islands, for example, have sadly had most of their culture and history completely smothered by the massive tourist trade. Instead of going somewhere that’s overly popular as a travel destination, choose a place that’s teeming with opportunities for truly exceptional experiences. Mongolia, for example, is perfect for adventurous explorers who want to get a taste of the nomadic lifestyle, and spend the night in a traditional ger. Cambodia is also a great place to get off the beaten track, with traditional villages dotted around jungles that are filled with ancient ruins.
